Frequently Asked Questions

Learn More About Pursuing a Finance Degree Online at American Public University

Find out more about this Bachelor of Science from American Public University. Get answers to common questions about finance coursework, time to completion, and how the finance major differs from the accounting major.
Yes. APU’s Bachelor of Science in Finance is offered entirely online. Courses start on the first Monday of every month, run for 8 to 16 weeks, and have no set login times. Students may submit weekly assignments and participate in discussion forums from anywhere with internet access.

Accounting programs focus on how organizations record and report financial transactions. Finance programs focus on what organizations do with that information to invest capital strategically.

Finance majors at APU still complete accounting coursework, however, to help them understand how to read and interpret financial statements.

Certification requirements are set by the issuing organizations, not by the University. Students who plan to pursue either credential should review the current requirements published by the CFA Institute and the CFP Board.

APU’s Bachelor of Science in Finance does not prepare students for the CFA or CFP exam.

Most bachelor’s degree programs take approximately four years to complete with full-time study. Time to completion varies, however, depending on factors such as academic performance, enrollment status, and the number of transfer credits a student brings to the finance program.
Finance coursework requires comfort with quantitative reasoning, though students do not need an advanced math background to begin. The curriculum is designed to establish the quantitative foundation and analytical skills that are integral to required upper-level coursework.
