On August 5, 2026, American Public University System combined with Rasmussen University and Hondros College of Nursing to form a single higher education institution. American Public University System (System) now includes American Public University, American Military University, Rasmussen University, and Hondros College of Nursing. The System is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Public Education, Inc. (APEI). Student Speaker Award

The Student Speaker Award recognizes graduating students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership, perseverance, and service, and who have the ability to inspire others through their personal story.

Selected student speakers represent their fellow graduates by delivering the student Commencement address during Commencement Weekend. Through their remarks, they celebrate the achievements of the graduating class, reflect on the shared student experience, and encourage fellow graduates as they begin the next chapter of their personal and professional journeys.

One student speaker is selected for each Commencement ceremony. The number of recipients may vary based on the Commencement schedule.

Applicants must:
  • Have conferred a degree, or submitted a graduation application for a degree expected to be conferred, between August 1, 2026 and June 1, 2027.
  • Have completed or be completing an associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.70.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, integrity and service.
  • Be well-spoken and able to capture the celebration of Commencement within a maximum of three minutes.
  • Be available to participate in required rehearsals and Commencement activities if selected.
  • Be in good academic and conduct standing with the University.

A complete application must include:

  • Completed application form.
  • A biography of no more than 150 words.
  • A current résumé.
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member or supervisor.
  • The complete text of the proposed Commencement speech.
  • A video hosted on YouTube or Vimeo delivering the proposed speech. The video may not exceed three minutes.

All application materials must be submitted by the published deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Applications are reviewed by the University Awards Committee using a standardized evaluation process.

The committee evaluates applicants based on:

  • Academic achievement.
  • Leadership and service.
  • Quality, originality, and authenticity of the proposed commencement speech.
  • Public speaking ability and communication skills.
  • Ability to represent the graduating class with professionalism, enthusiasm, and authenticity.

Finalists may be invited to participate in an interview or deliver their speech as part of the selection process.

The University Awards Committee selects the top applicants and forwards them to the University President for final review and approval.

Recipients receive:

  • The opportunity to deliver the student Commencement address during the assigned ceremony.
  • An engraved plaque.
  • A Student Speaker stole to wear during the ceremony.
  • Travel and hotel accommodations in accordance with University award guidelines.
  • Recognition in University communications.

Attendance during Commencement Weekend is required.
