APU must adhere to the residential credit requirements and corresponding transfer credit limits set forth by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). These rules govern how many credits can be transferred toward a degree at a student’s ‘home’ university.
Traditional credit is academic; earned through an accredited institution of higher learning with institutional and/or national accreditation, or the military; earned through a military school or sponsored program.
Non-traditional credit is training or certifications earned in the workplace or outside of an academic institution. These non-academic options are based on an assessment, competency testing, experience, determination of knowledge, and military occupations.
Time Limitations of Coursework
If you are requesting an award of transfer credit toward any of the subjects below, please be aware that there are time limitations based on when you earned the credit at your previous college or university.
At the graduate level, all types of transfer credit (academic credit, military credit, credit award via APUS policy) must be earned within 10 calendar years of date of evaluation. Credit older than 10 calendar years may not be transferred into a graduate-level program.
